Rhythm Study (2016)
Improvised soundtrack to a video of improvised movement by Nicola van Straaten. In the first part of the piece, the rhythmic scraping of Nicola’s trainers on concrete provide a counterpoint to sounds I made with two hands (clapping, skin-on-skin friction), which later gives way to an instant composition on a prepared piano. I recorded the soundtrack on a handheld recorder in one take per section and subsequently loosely transcribed the sound into two “scores.”
Presented at the Joburg Fringe (2016) and at the National Art Gallery of Namibia in Windhoek as part of a group exhibition titled Conversations (2016), where the score was purchased. The score was also published in the Rhythm issue of Any Body Zine.
