Courtyard Dances (2019)

Courtyard Dances is an audiovisual installation created by Nicola van Straaten and Coila-Leah Enderstein for the SoundsAbout exhibition series at Zwitschermaschine project space, Berlin.

The work comprises three synchronous projected films, each with a stereo soundtrack composed in conjunction with the other films to create a multi-channel soundtrack across two rooms. All the material is derived from footage, spanning three years, of two artists and friends improvising in the courtyards of the places where they have lived. For the iteration of the project in November 2019, Nicola van Straaten and Coila-Leah Enderstein performed improvised movement sequences concurrently with the audiovisual installation, bringing to life a personal archive of creative intimacy.
